Tartumaa Campsites

A list of campsites in Tartu county in Estonia. Each site is designated as either a tent site (telkimisala) or a campfire site (lõkkekoht), however in practice there is usually little difference and both are generally suitable for camping with tents.

Pangodi

After failing to find a spot at the Jõemõisa, Tammeluha, Kalamehe, Kukeseene, Kaiu järve cluster, we continued on to Pangodi campsite, about ~15km from our final goal of Otepää.

This is a unique RMK campsite, an part of its job is to be a recreational area for lake visitors. The campsite is located right on the lake, with easy access direct to the water. Near the water access is a large playgrounds area with three fire rings quite close to each other and the playground. There is also a second grassy area adjacent that has another three covered picnic tables with standing covered firepits.

We arrived at 9pm on a summer Saturday evening and there were quite a few people at the site, but most were not overnight campers. We took a fire pit near the playground and were a little concerned that there might be too much noise from late-night partiers, but in fact it was quiet all night. In the morning, we occasionally we could hear people walk by our tent, but everyone was polite and quiet as can be expected.

There is a little road that continues onward toward some private residences, but nearby is an old monument to eight soldiers killed during the Estonian War of Independence.

If you'd like a good daytime spot near a lake with room for throwing a frisbee, and you don't mind spending the night in somewhat open area with others, then this is a fine spot.

Tiksoja

After failing to find a spot at the Jõemõisa, Tammeluha, Kalamehe, Kukeseene, Kaiu järve cluster, we continued in the direction of our ultimate goal of Otepää hoping to find a site on the way. We stopped here at Tiksoja, but did not end up staying.

The site is located off a larger highway. Although the site is physically removed from the road and there are trees to obscure its visiblity, car noise would likely be heard at night. There are two fire sites, both with just enough room for a tent. Each has a covered picnic table and raised semi-enclosed metal firepit. There is a shared outhouse.

Both sites were occupied when we arrived around 7p on a pretty August Saturday. Although there was a clearing about 100 meter walk down a trail which had space for several tents, there were no fire facilities there. We decided to continue onward, eventually staying at Pangodi, near our destination.
