Lääne-Virumaa Campsites

A list of campsites in Lääne-Viru county in Estonia. Each site is designated as either a tent site (telkimisala) or a campfire site (lõkkekoht), however in practice there is usually little difference and both are generally suitable for camping with tents.

Oandu

This is a great campsite. It has 4 firepit areas (3 open and one covered) and is located adjacent to a river. Each individual area is relatively well isolated, so even if the campsite is full there is a feeling of coziness and privacy.

The site is located in Lahemaa national park. Oandu forest is lush and green. The river is widened at this point but often boggy or shallow. There is a wooden walk that leads toward the water. We've found wild strawberries here and there are some striking rock formations nearby. The large field adjacent to the site is closed off but one can see scarecrows perennially at work there.

We've used Oandu as a base for bike camping. There are some neat locations nearby that are reachable by bike. Altja, about 2.5km north, is a scenic point with an old fishing village and the beach is a unique overlook to some rock features of the Baltic Sea. If there, you should stop at Altja Kõrts for food or refreshment. Oandu is also fairly close to three exceptional manor houses: Sagadi, Palmse, and Vihula. It's a nice bike ride among all three on flat country roads. Taking the northern roads amongst the woods toward the coast is enjoyable on bikes too.

Oandu is one end of Estonia's Oandu-Ikla trail which stretches southwest across Estonia. Nearby is RMK's Lahemaa nature center.

Võsu

We've visited this site a couple times but haven't been impressed enough to stay. The site has 2 covered firepits and one table situated in a medium-sized field.

I think the site would be great for a large group that can enjoy sharing the space and amenities together. However, for a single camper or family, sharing the open field means sacrificing a bit of privacy and possiblity tranquility. Nearby Oandu is a much better option.
